Respite Services

What is a Respite Service?

A respite service provides short-term care for children, giving parents or carers a much-needed break to rest, attend appointments, or manage other responsibilities. It’s a supportive, flexible option designed to reduce stress and help families maintain balance during challenging times.

We also offer respite services for children in care under the parental responsibility of the Minister. We are available for day respite, overnight respite and sleepover respite.

At Family Konnect, our respite care is delivered in a safe, nurturing environment by trained staff who prioritise the child’s comfort and wellbeing. Whether planned or on short notice, our goal is to offer reliable support when families need it most.

What happens during a
Respite Service?

During a respite service, the child/ren are cared for by our trained and compassionate staff in a safe, supportive environment tailored to their needs. Depending on the arrangement, children may enjoy a variety of engaging activities—whether that’s quiet time with books and crafts, play at a local park, or outings to places like the movies, a theme park, or other fun, child-friendly venues. We aim to create a positive and enriching experience that supports the child’s wellbeing, encourages social and emotional development, and provides them with a sense of enjoyment and normalcy outside of their usual routine.

Child Familiarisation Session

A child familiarisation session is an optional step we offer before beginning services such as supervised visits, changeovers, transport, or respite care. During this session, a Family Konnect supervisor visits the child in their home environment to gently introduce themselves and begin forming a connection. Meeting the supervisor in a familiar and safe setting helps the child feel more at ease, reducing anxiety and creating a sense of trust before any formal service begins. This early introduction supports a smoother and more positive experience during future contact, as the child is more likely to feel comfortable and secure knowing who will be accompanying or supervising them. Familiarisation sessions are especially valuable for younger children or those who may be experiencing contact supervision for the first time.
