Supervised Contact Visits

What are supervised contact visits?
A supervised contact visit is a structured and supported opportunity for children to spend time with a parent or family member they do not live with, in a safe and neutral environment. These visits are designed to foster ongoing parental involvement, which plays a vital role in building strong parent-child relationships and supporting healthy emotional and social development.
At Family Konnect, we prioritise creating a calm, respectful space where parents and children can engage meaningfully, with the focus on quality interactions rather than just time spent. We believe that when parents cooperate and reduce conflict, children are better able to adjust to challenging circumstances. Our goal is to make each visit as smooth and pleasant as possible, minimising stress and promoting the well-being and safety of everyone involved.

What happens during a supervised contact visit?
Supportive, structured and impartial
An experienced Contact Visit Supervisor from Family Konnect’s team will observe the interaction between a child and the supervised parent to ensure the visit is conducted in an appropriate location and under safe, stress-free conditions.
All conversations and physical interactions are observed and documented in an impartial contact report, which is suitable for court filing and provides a timely account of the visit and includes interactions between the child and parent and other attendees.

The location of the contact visit is determined by the needs of the child and their family and is subject to court orders, casework, safety, and WHS issues, as well as negotiations between parents. Take a look at our recommended venues at the bottom of our resources page to find some suitable visit locations in your community.

What should I tell my child about supervised contact visits?
Simple, reassuring preparation
Preparing your child is an important part of the process. Stay positive and use calm, simple words. Let them know they’ll be spending some special time with their parent or family member at a safe and fun place. If possible, take your child to visit the location beforehand so they feel more comfortable.

You can also let your child know that a friendly face will be there to help things go smoothly and make sure everyone feels safe and supported. A photo of the allocated worker will be shared with the carer parent ahead of time, so the child can become familiar with their friendly face before meeting in person. If appropriate, your child may also say hello to them during a quick phone call or a short pre-visit meeting to help them feel at ease.

Child Familiarisation Session

Build confidence before visits begin

Our Child Familiarisation Session is a supportive, one-on-one visit designed to help children feel comfortable and confident before beginning supervised contact.
This session takes place in the child’s home to provide a familiar and reassuring environment, allowing the child to meet the allocated supervisor in a relaxed, low-pressure setting.
The aim is to gently ease the child into the visitation process and address any anxieties they may have. A detailed written report is provided following the session, documenting observations and the child’s level of engagement.
